In response, the Water–Energy–Food (WEF) nexus has emerged as an integrated framework for addressing the interdependencies among these critical sectors while enhancing climate resilience. This study mapped and synthesized existing evidence on WEF nexus approaches to climate change adaptation in SSA through a scoping review. Guided by the Arksey and O’Malley framework and reported in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, the review involved a systematic search of Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library, Google Scholar, and relevant grey literature sources. The findings revealed a growing body of research on WEF nexus-based adaptation, with studies predominantly concentrated in Southern Africa, particularly South Africa. Major integrated resource management approaches identified include climate-smart agriculture, integrated water-resources management, renewable energy integration, nexus-based planning, governance and policy integration, and community-based adaptation. Reported outcomes include enhanced climate resilience; improved water, energy, and food security; strengthened livelihoods; increased resource-use efficiency; and improved institutional coordination. However, implementation remains constrained by fragmented governance systems, limited financing, inadequate data, technical capacity deficits, and weak stakeholder engagement. Key enabling factors include policy coherence, institutional collaboration, technological innovation, climate finance, and capacity-building. The review concludes that the WEF nexus provides a valuable framework for advancing climate adaptation and sustainable resource management in SSA.","气候变化对撒哈拉以南非洲（Sub-Saharan Africa, SSA）的水资源可用性、能源安全和粮食生产构成重大威胁，削弱了可持续发展，并加剧了依赖气候敏感型资源的社区的脆弱性。 ,null,"Economies","2026-10-06T00:00:00Z","论文",10,false,70
"H7","climate","气候适应与防灾减灾","/topic/environment/climate","H",[
"classified","2026-10-22.2","rules
45,54,61,68,75
18,true,[49],"climate change",[51,29,49,52],"气候变化","climate resilience",[29
"A8",7,[],[28,59],"food security",[28
"I1",3,[],[73],"smart agriculture",[
"W7220736064",[89,92
Adetomiwa Kolapo","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0808-1293
Deborah Olude
6,[106,181,250,320,404,489
4983,"Climate Change and Livelihood Vulnerability among Smallholder Farming Households in the Diffa Region of Niger’s Lake Chad Basin","https://doi.org/10.9734/jeai/2026/v48i104567","Climate change affects agricultural production, on which 80% of rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa depend for their livelihoods. In the Lake Chad Basin, recent fluctuations in hydro-climatic conditions have compromised crop yields and food security, severely affecting smallholder farmers’ well-being. Enhancing their adaptive capacity and resilience is therefore essential for sustainable development. This study assesses smallholder farmers’ vulnerability to climate change-induced extreme weather events in rural areas of the Lake Chad Basin using the Livelihood Vulnerability Index (LVI). Data were collected through questionnaire surveys of 200 farming households across four villages in the Diffa region of Niger. The LVI was calculated using nine components: sociodemographic profile, education and housing, livelihood strategy, social networks, food, water resources, health, land resources, and disasters and climate variability. Results showed that farmers in Kangarwa were the most vulnerable (LVI = 0.58), while those in Boulangou were the least vulnerable (0.51). Digargo and Mamari had similar vulnerability levels (0.55 and 0.56, respectively). Overall, farmers in all four villages were moderately vulnerable. Kangarwa’s higher vulnerability was mainly associated with social networks (0.81), livelihood strategy (0.75), and land resources (0.75). In Boulangou, low vulnerability was linked to water resources (0.12) and sociodemographic conditions (0.35), although land (0.69), livelihood strategy (0.67), and food (0.65) increased vulnerability. These findings can inform interventions to strengthen smallholder farmers’ resilience. Diversifying livelihoods and adopting climate-smart agriculture technologies could enhance adaptive capacity and reduce vulnerability in highly affected areas.","气候变化影响着农业生产，而撒哈拉以南非洲80%的农村社区依赖农业维持生计。 ,"Journal of Experimental Agriculture International","2026-10-14T00:00:00Z",65
[135,139,145,149,153
[49],[51,49],[51,29
15,[142],"smallholder",[122,142],[122
[],[28,59],[28
[],[66],[
"W7221748179",[165,167,169,171,173
Issiaka Issaharou Matchi
I. This paper exploits the staggered implementation, beginning in 2018, of China's agricultural insurance reforms covering full production costs and planting income as a quasi-natural experiment. Drawing on provincial panel data from 2013 to 2024, we first develop a multidimensional composite index to capture food production resilience. A staggered difference-in-differences specification is then adopted to systematically assess the causal effect of these reforms on such resilience and to explore the underlying transmission channels. Moreover, from a novel climate change perspective, the analysis examines the heterogeneous treatment effects across varying degrees of climate risk exposure. The empirical findings reveal that the policy-led agricultural insurance reform significantly and robustly enhances China's food production resilience. Mechanism tests indicate that advances in agricultural technology and the expansion of large-scale farming operations serve as important pathways through which the insurance policy takes effect. Further investigation shows that climate change risk positively moderates the policy impact: as climate risk intensifies, the marginal contribution of insurance to resilience becomes stronger. Heterogeneity analysis also demonstrates that the policy effect is more pronounced in western China and in localities with higher rates of disaster-induced losses. Taken together, these results offer solid empirical backing for broadening the pilot programs of full cost and planting income insurance. They also establish a theoretical basis for positioning publicly supported agricultural insurance as an effective instrument for climate change adaptation, providing valuable guidance on strengthening the climate adaptability and resilience of food production to ensure national food security.","在全球气候威胁日益加剧的背景下，增强粮食生产系统的韧性已成为维护国家粮食安全的关键任务。 ,"Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems","2026-10-05T00:00:00Z",88
[212,217,221
[214],"agricultural insurance",[199,214],[199
[],[51,29,49],[29
"W7220367453",[233,236,238,240,242
Changzhe Deng","https://orcid.org/0009-0006-0852-5997
Maimiao Sun
Xueyu Lin
Chencan Rao
Qiuping Guo
,"2026-10-06T23:30:05.886883Z
2939,"Climate Change and Food Security in Africa: Harnessing Responsible AI for Sustainable Agricultural Transformation","https://doi.org/10.56201/ijaes.vol.11.no9.2025.pg79.102","Africa stands at the crossroads of two defining 21st-century challenges: climate change and food insecurity. The continents agricultural systems are increasingly disrupted by rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and extreme weather events, exacerbating hunger, poverty, and rural vulnerability. At the same time, Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents transformative potential to support climate adaptation, improve agricultural resilience, and enhance food systems governance across Africa. This study undertakes a qualitative content analysis and critical synthesis of 25 peer-reviewed articles, institutional reports, and working papers to examine how AI is currently applied and could be more effectively leveraged for climate-resilient agriculture and food security on the continent. Findings reveal a growing body of innovations, from AIdriven weather forecasting and early warning systems to precision agriculture and supply chain optimization. Yet the study identifies persistent structural limitations, including unreliable data infrastructure, low digital capacity in rural areas, and governance gaps around ethical deployment, data ownership, and equitable access. Through African case studies, the paper explores how localized AI solutions when supported by inclusive policies, multi-stakeholder collaboration, and responsible innovation frameworks can mitigate climate-induced food shocks and drive sustainable development. The paper argues for a strategic alignment between AI deployment and national adaptation plans, emphasizing the need for stronger public-private partnerships, investments in AI-ready infrastructure, and the development of ethical and contextsensitive governance mechanisms. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research investigates the prevalence, drivers and lived experiences of food insecurity within this community. A structured survey was administered to 412 randomly selected smallholder households across the district's wards. The quantitative data were supplemented by 12 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and 24 Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with farmers, community leaders and agricultural extension officers to capture qualitative nuances. The study is grounded in the Food Security Theory (FST), which conceptualises food security through its four pillars: food availability, food access, food utilisation and food stability. Findings reveal a precarious food security situation. Quantitatively, 78.4% of households were found to be food insecure, with an average Hunger Months Index of 4.7 months per year. The study identifies a significant disconnect between maize production, the national staple and household consumption, with over 65% of households failing to produce enough maize to meet their annual requirements. Qualitative data illuminated the multi-faceted drivers of this insecurity. Key points to note include climate change whereby erratic rainfall and prolonged mid-season dry spells were consistently reported as the primary production challenges, limited access to farming inputs whereby high costs and unreliable supplies of certified seeds, fertilizers and agro[1]chemicals constrain productivity. Morelso, socio-economic factors such as poverty, lack of viable alternative livelihoods and limited access to formal credit perpetuate a cycle of vulnerability. In addition, institutional weaknesses, for example, challenges with agricultural extension services and market inefficiencies, exacerbate the situation. The study concludes that food insecurity in Zvimba is not merely a problem of food production, but is deeply rooted in structural issues affecting food access, food utilisation, as well as food stability. Recommendations are proposed for a multi-sectoral approach, including promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and drought-resistant crops, strengthening input support systems and rural finance, diversifying livelihood strategies and enhancing the capacity of extension services. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the localised dynamics of food security and provides evidence-based guidance for policymakers, development practitioners and the farmers of Zvimba themselves.","本研究对津巴布韦兹维姆巴区小农户（smallholder farmers, SHFs）的粮食安全状况进行了全面分析。 Ngenani The Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti Journal of Community Engagement and Societal Transformations","2026-10-20T00:00:00Z",55
[339,340
[344,348,352,358,364,371,377
[59],[28,59],[28
[142],[122,142],[122
[],[51,355,49,356],"干旱","drought",[334
"G1",[],[335,362],"agricultural extension",[335
"W7223029383",[389,392,395
Casper Myambo","https://orcid.org/0009-0007-8625-7526
Chipo Plaxedes Mubaya","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4123-0238
Patience Mutopo
,"2026-10-21T23:30:08.937079Z
5312,"Agricultural Production under Climate Change in Afghanistan: Impacts, Challenges and Adaptation Options (A Review)","https://esrj.edu.af/esrj/article/view/123","Climate change poses serious challenges to agriculture in Afghanistan, a country largely dependent on rainfed farming and highly vulnerable to water scarcity, drought, and temperature extremes. Understanding the impacts of climate variability and identifying effective adaptation strategies are essential to sustain agricultural productivity and ensure food security. This systematic review synthesizes empirical, modeling, and review studies on climate change effects on Afghan agriculture, assesses adaptation measures, and integrates regional experiences from Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. A structured literature search was conducted using peer-reviewed articles, institutional reports, and regional studies published between 2000 and 2025. Studies were selected based on relevance to Afghan agro-ecological systems, climate stressors, and adaptation strategies. We extracted data using a structured table format following PRISMA guidelines, combining national and regional evidence. Findings indicate that water scarcity, prolonged drought, rising temperatures, and erratic precipitation are the main stressors affecting major crops, including wheat, barley, chickpea, maize, and cotton. Yield reductions ranged from 12% to 25% across provinces. Adaptation strategies such as Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), efficient irrigation (drip and sprinkler), rainwater harvesting, mulching, and drought- or heat-tolerant crop varieties were most effective. Regional evidence confirms the transferability of these measures under similar agro-climatic conditions. In conclusion, climate change significantly threatens agricultural productivity in Afghanistan. Evidence-based adaptation strategies, supported by coordinated policy and capacity-building initiatives, can enhance resilience, protect rural livelihoods, and ensure sustainable food security.","气候变化对阿富汗农业构成严峻挑战，该国农业在很大程度上依赖雨养耕作，极易受到水资源短缺、干旱和极端温度的影响。
[422
"irrigation","水资源与灌溉","/topic/environment/irrigation
[429,433,438,442,449,453,460,464
[49],[51,355,49,356],[51
[],[28,59],[28
"A2",[],[446,447],"小麦","wheat",[
[],[368,369],[
"A6",[],[457,458],"棉花","cotton",[
[],[73],[264
"W7222907396",[477,479,481
Mohammad Shafiq Faieq
Mustafa Abid
Abdul khalil Afghani
,"2026-10-19T23:30:11.285828Z
5308,"Geopolitics and food security: A comprehensive review of emerging risks and responses","https://doi.org/10.51200/jsffs.v2i2.7666","This review paper examines the relationship between geopolitics and food security through a Systematic Literature Review guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses framework. A total of 15 peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2015 and 2026 were reviewed to identify emerging geopolitical risks and responses affecting global food systems. The study synthesizes literature on armed conflicts, trade restrictions, climate change, supply chain disruptions, energy market instability, and technological transformation in agriculture. The findings identified four major themes. First, geopolitical conflicts and protectionist trade policies significantly disrupt global food supply chains and increase food price volatility. Second, climate-related shock such as droughts, floods, and extreme weather events intensifies food insecurity, particularly in import-dependent and developing economies. Third, weaknesses in global logistics and energy dependence expose food systems to external shocks and market instability. Fourth, technological innovations, including smart farming, precision agriculture, and digital monitoring systems, play an increasingly important role in strengthening agricultural productivity, improving resource efficiency, and enhancing resilience against geopolitical and environmental uncertainties. The policy implications of this study include strengthening regional food reserves, diversifying import sources, investing in climate-resilient agriculture, promoting the adoption of smart farming technologies, and enhancing institutional cooperation between governments and international organizations. The relevance of smart farming is increasingly evident, as precision agriculture, Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring systems, and data-driven farming technologies play a critical role in improving productivity, reducing resource inefficiency, and enhancing food system resilience under geopolitical stress. The study contributes to a broader understanding of how geopolitical dynamics shape food security and provides recommendations for building sustainable, resilient, and technology-driven food systems in an increasingly uncertain global environment.","本文通过遵循系统评价与荟萃分析首选报告条目（Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses）框架的系统文献综述，考察地缘政治与粮食安全之间的关系。 ,"Journal of Smart Farming and Food Security","2026-10-19T00:00:00Z",77
[507,508
"I5","agricultural-iot","物联网传感与边缘计算","/topic/digital-agriculture/agricultural-iot","I
[517,521,526,530
[59],[28,59],[28
11,[],[264,288,289],[264,288
[],[51,355,49],[
"W7222902031",[545,547
Parameswaran Mahendran
Wong Sing Yun","https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5776-8852
,"2026-10-19T23:30:07.850994Z"]
