However, increasing deforestation, climate change, habitat fragmentation, and unsustainable resource exploitation continue to threaten forest ecosystems worldwide. The objective of this review is to determine the ecological, economic, and governance conditions under which specific forest innovations translate into measurable sustainability outcomes, and to synthesize these conditions into coherent, evidence-based pathways applicable across different regional contexts. Framed through a social-ecological systems (SES) and resilience lens, this review critically examines recent advances in forest innovation by integrating sustainable forest management practices with emerging technological developments, including precision forestry, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), LiDAR, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), biotechnology, artificial intelligence (AI), digital forestry, biomass utilization, and forest-based bioeconomy approaches. Unlike conventional narrative reviews, this study applies a common five criterion evaluation framework comprising ecological effectiveness, technological maturity, economic feasibility, governance requirements, and regional applicability to comparatively evaluates the strengths, limitations, implementation challenges of these innovations across diverse ecological and socio-economic contexts, thereby moving beyond the largely descriptive, single-domain coverage of prior forest technology and forest governance reviews to an explicitly cross-domain, comparative synthesis. The review further explores the contributions of community-based forest management, climate-smart forestry, carbon management strategies, ecosystem services, green infrastructure, and innovative forest-derived products toward achieving long-term environmental sustainability. The analysis demonstrates that technological innovations alone cannot ensure sustainable forest management unless supported by effective governance, equitable community participation, adequate financial investment, and adaptive policy frameworks. The review identifies critical knowledge gaps related to technology adoption, institutional capacity, climate resilience, and long-term monitoring, and derives four specific, evidence-anchored integrated pathways that combine ecological, technological, economic, and governance innovations. This review provides a comprehensive, deliberately broad-scope synthesis of contemporary forest innovation and offers practical recommendations for researchers, policymakers, and forest managers working toward resilient forest ecosystems and the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 15 (Life on Land).","森林在气候调节、生物多样性保护、生态系统服务供给以及可持续社会经济发展中发挥着至关重要的作用。
"needs_review","2026-10-22.2","rules
[39,50,58,66,73,80
GIS","geographic information",[
"I3",[],[70,71],"遥感","remote sensing",[28
"I2",4,[],[78],"artificial intelligence",[26
"H4",[],[],[29],"农业相关性需要复核",[87,88],"森林创新 遥感 LiDAR 无人机","数字林业 森林碳汇 可持续经营","森林创新遥感LiDAR无人机-4495","10.1016/j.nxsust.2026.100546
"W7220854619",[94,97
Shivani Garg","https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7879-7177
Pooja Arora","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4860-4714",0,"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2949823626003016/pdf
6,[114,194,280,360,422,484
4595,"Nationwide deadwood mapping reveals rising mountain forests vulnerability","https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2026.09.041","Forest mortality is increasing globally under climate change, making detailed, large-scale monitoring essential for understanding ecosystem responses and guiding adaptive forest management. Here, we present a spatio-temporal assessment of standing deadwood in Switzerland from 2018 to 2023, derived from centimeter-scale high-resolution aerial imagery. We reveal a consistent upslope concentration of standing deadwood, with highest shares occurring around mid to high elevations (∼1,500 m), despite declining forest cover, and relative increases of up to 43% in overlapping survey areas following the 2018 drought. Maximum temperature anomalies and conifer dominance were the strongest predictors of standing deadwood. The consistent accumulation of standing deadwood at higher elevations suggests increasing vulnerability of mountain forests, with implications for carbon storage, biodiversity, and disturbance susceptibility under ongoing climate change. These patterns highlight the need to address rising forest mortality as a key component of climate-adaptive forest management. Furthermore, our results demonstrate the potential of high-resolution remote sensing for large-scale forest mortality monitoring. Our methods offer a reproducible and transferable framework for identifying vulnerability hotspots and supporting climate-adapted forest management.","在气候变化背景下，全球森林死亡率不断上升，因此开展详细、大规模监测对于理解生态系统响应和指导适应性森林管理至关重要。 ,"ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing","2026-10-08T00:00:00Z",79
[],[70,71],[28
[],[45,47],[
[],[],[29],[157,158],"瑞士 立枯木 遥感监测","森林死亡 高分辨率航空影像","瑞士立枯木遥感监测-4595","10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2026.09.041
"W7220997028",[164,167,170,173,176,179,182,185
Luca Ferrari","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8957-4830
Lars T. The summer of 2021 brought a severe drought to southern Finland. We explored how a drained boreal peatland forest responds to drought by combining a wide range of in situ monitoring and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) remote sensing. A dataset combining eddy-covariance (EC) fluxes, sap-flow sensors, UAV mapping, soil and weather data was collected. Spruce stand reaction to drought is examined at sub-daily to seasonal time scales, and its temporal and spatial features are identified separately for a recently thinned Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) block and a control block. Sap flow data showed that the CCF-harvested block shows greater tree resilience to high vapour pressure deficit (VPD) than the control block, likely due to the higher soil water availability during the rainless and hot period. At the same time, both the control and CCF harvest blocks had notably reduced net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and increased Bowen ratio, particularly on high VPD days. The UAV surveys indicated that trees in the CCF block tend to have higher canopy temperatures and lower Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) than in the control block, implying their possible susceptibility to more extreme drought.","摘要：2021年夏季，芬兰南部遭遇严重干旱。
"W7127903348",[244,247,250,253,256,259,261,264,266,269,271
Pavel Alekseychik","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4081-3917
Mikko Peltoniemi","https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2028-6969
Raisa Mäkipää","https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3146-4425
Ville Tuominen","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0612-128X
Tuomas Laurila","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1967-0624
Hamlyn G. This study aims to ecologically validate a high-resolution (30 m) predictive map of MOGF probability across Italy by integrating it with independent ground-based data from the 2015 National Forest Inventory (INFC2015). Utilizing a multi-source approach, we analyzed 6993 inventory sampling plots across diverse forest types and environmental gradients. Statistical analysis confirmed that higher MOGF probabilities strongly correlate with indicators of advanced stand development, including older age classes (> 120 years), multilayered vertical structures, and high canopy cover (> 80%). MOGF probability is also significantly higher within strictly protected areas (e.g., National Park Zone A) and topographically remote sites characterized by high altitudes and steep slopes. Quantitative correlations also link MOGF probability to an increase in above-ground biomass and deadwood. While the study successfully validates the spatial patterns of forest maturity, limitations include the current lack of national-scale 3D LiDAR data for deadwood modeling and the lack of microhabitat indicators in the INFC2015. However, the anticipated inclusion of these metrics in future national frameworks will further refine the monitoring of these ecosystems.","成熟林与类原始林（Mature and Old-Growth-like Forests, MOGF）对生物多样性保护和气候调节至关重要，但在欧洲范围内仍属稀有且呈破碎化分布。 ,"L’Italia forestale e montana","2026-10-06T00:00:00Z
"W7220657040",[320,323,326,329,331,333,336,339,342,345,347,350
Costanza Borghi","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5334-7548
Francesco Solano","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2457-5517
Giovanni D’Amico","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2341-3268
Titomanlio Pepe
Mattia Niccoli
Elia Vangi","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9772-2258
Francesco Parisi","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1914-7331
Davide Travaglini","https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0706-2653
Giuseppe Modica","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0388-0256
Giancarlo Papitto
Gianluca Piovesan","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3214-0839
Gherardo Chirici","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0669-5726","https://italiaforestalemontana.it/index.php/ifm/article/download/1250/1223
,"2026-10-08T23:30:30.762484Z
2671,"Burn severity, vegetation degradation, and carbon storage loss in the Belemedik forest fire: implications for protected area management and post-fire restoration","https://doi.org/10.46309/biodicon.2026.2000016","Purpose: This study evaluates the ecological impacts of the 9 September 2020 forest fire in the Kaleboynu area of Eskikonacık Neighborhood, Pozantı District, Adana Province, on the Çakıt Stream micro-watershed, which partially overlaps with Belemedik Nature Park. Using an integrated remote sensing approach, it assesses fire-induced changes in burn severity, vegetation structure, and carbon storage capacity to support post-fire restoration planning in a protected Mediterranean ecosystem. Methods: The study was conducted within the 9,783.06-ha Çakıt Stream micro-watershed. Cloud-free Sentinel-2A MSI Level-2A imagery acquired before (05.09.2020) and after the fire (15.09.2020) was used to calculate the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR), Differenced NBR (dNBR), and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Carbon storage was estimated using a nonlinear regression model relating NDVI to pixel-level carbon content. Spatial analyses were performed in ArcGIS 10.8.Findings: dNBR analysis showed that 92.49% (9,049.16 ha) of the watershed remained unburned or unchanged, while 725.92 ha was affected to varying degrees. NDVI results revealed losses of 330.65 ha of tree cover and 96.09 ha of shrub/grassland vegetation, accompanied by a 426.74 ha increase in bare surfaces. Total carbon storage declined from 105,465.71 tC to 105,450.25 tC, representing a loss of 15.46 tC (56.69 t CO₂e), primarily concentrated on forested slopes surrounding the Çakıt Stream valley. Conclusions: Although the wildfire affected only a limited portion of the watershed, it caused substantial biomass losses, disrupted vegetation continuity, and reduced carbon sequestration capacity. The concentration of damage on steep slopes indicates increased risks of erosion and surface runoff. Erosion control, restoration with pioneer and fire-adapted native species, and long-term remote sensing monitoring are recommended to support ecosystem recovery, restore habitat connectivity, and sustain ecosystem services.","目的：本研究评估2020年9月9日发生在阿达纳省波赞特ı区埃斯基科纳吉克街区卡莱博伊努地区的森林火灾对恰克特溪微流域（该流域与贝莱梅迪克自然公园部分重叠）的生态影响。 ,"Biological Diversity and Conservation","2026-09-15T00:00:00Z
[379,383,388,392
[],[70,71],[28
[],[386],"carbon sequestration",[29
[],[46],[373
"W7213299850",[406,409,412
Nuriye Ebru Yıldız","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3508-4895
Barış Kahveci","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8508-1748
Tülay Ezer","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6485-5505","https://dergipark.org.tr/en/download/article-file/6248142
,"2026-09-16T23:30:30.571646Z
2174,"Optical Remote Sensing and Machine Learning Enable Scalable Carbon Mapping in Himalayan Forests Despite Spectral Saturation Challenges","https://doi.org/10.32942/x29d5f","Accurate aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation is critical for climate change mitigation and carbon accounting in mountain regions, yet spatially explicit mapping remains limited by reliance on conventional field methods and underexplored machine learning approaches in the Himalaya. Bhutan, a carbon-negative nation maintaining 70% forest cover, faces urgent demand to develop robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems for carbon market participation under the Paris Agreement Article 6. This study developed a random forest (RF) model that integrates Sentinel-2A multispectral imagery, nine vegetation indices, topographic variables, and field-measured AGB from 99 plots across 244.6 hectares in the Kyentshen Community Forest. Using recursive feature elimination, 10 key predictors were identified from 27 candidate variables: Band 11, SLAVI, Band 12, WDRVI, NDVI, elevation, NDWI, GNDVI, band ratio (r3), and Band 9. The optimized RF model achieved R² = 0.34 and RMSE = 67.98 ± 19.79 t/ha on training data (Ntree = 500, Mtry = 3). However, test-set performance declined substantially (R² = 0.42, RMSE = 86.14 t/ha), indicating overfitting and reflecting limitations of spectral saturation in high-biomass stands (>300 t/ha). A Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed systematic overestimation (predicted median: 118.36 t/ha vs. observed: 105.15 t/ha; p = 0.03). Despite moderate accuracy, this study demonstrates that freely available Sentinel-2 data combined with machine learning offers a cost-effective, scalable alternative to traditional field mapping for rapid AGB assessment across Bhutan's temperate forests. Vegetation indices, particularly SLAVI and WDRVI, proved superior to raw spectral bands, offering improved sensitivity to dense canopies. The spatial-transect methodology and 10-predictor framework provide a replicable foundation for advancing Bhutan's forest carbon accounting systems. We recommend integrating synthetic aperture radar (SAR) or LiDAR to overcome optical saturation, enabling higher accuracy for robust MRV compliance and carbon credit monetization. This work directly supports the maintenance of Bhutan's carbon-neutral status and establishes the technical baseline for scaling AGB monitoring across mountain regions where engineered infrastructure capacity is limited, but climate action urgency is paramount.","准确估算地上生物量（AGB）对于山区减缓气候变化和碳核算至关重要，但空间显式制图仍受限于对传统野外方法的依赖以及喜马拉雅地区机器学习方法研究不足。
[71],[454],"multispectral",[440,28
[],[54,55],[
"W7212083800",[472,474
Namgay Wangchuk
Yonten Dorji","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6508-9582","https://ecoevorxiv.org/repository/object/14866/download/25843/
,"2026-09-11T23:30:32.934604Z
5577,"Assessing Land Use and Land Cover Change in the Jamanxim River Region (Brazilian Amazon) from 2015 to 2025 Using CBERS-4/PAN Imagery","https://doi.org/10.29150/jhrs.v16i4.269068","Land use and land cover (LULC) changes in the Amazon are among the main drivers of biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and the intensification of climate change. This study aimed to analyze the multitemporal dynamics of LULC around the Jamanxim River, Pará, Brazilian Amazon, between 2015 and 2025, using high-resolution imagery from the CBERS-4/PAN satellite. The study area covers 492.74 km², including part of the Jamanxim National Forest, a conservation unit under strong pressure from agricultural expansion and logging activities. The methodology included geometric correction of the images, Gram–Schmidt pansharpening, and supervised classification with the Random Forest algorithm, validated with historical imagery from Google Earth Pro. Thematic maps of land use and cover were generated, and performance metrics such as overall accuracy, omission and commission errors, and F1-scores were assessed. The results indicated a significant reduction in forest cover, from 412.28 km² in 2015 to 355.47 km² in 2025 (–13.78%). Non-vegetated areas increased by 132.47%, while agricultural areas expanded by 54.97%. The forest and water body classes showed high accuracy (F1-score > 0.95), while confusion persisted between agricultural and bare soil classes. Overall accuracy remained above 90% across all years, with the highest performance recorded in 2020 (96.31%). These results highlight the potential of CBERS-4/PAN imagery for monitoring multitemporal changes in tropical forest landscapes. At the same time, they reveal the intensification of deforestation and the growing threats to conservation in the Amazon, reinforcing the importance of remote sensing for environmental management and policy support.","亚马逊地区的土地利用与土地覆盖（LULC）变化是生物多样性丧失、生态系统退化以及气候变化加剧的主要驱动因素之一。 ,"Journal of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing","2026-10-20T00:00:00Z",78
"W7223141286",[537,540,542,545,548,551
Ubiratan Joaquim da Silva","https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7995-6416
Gabriel Henrique Santos Silva
Juarez Antonio da Silva","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2898-0309
Anderson Luiz Ribeiro de Paiva","https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3475-1454
Leidjane Maria Maciel de Oliveira","https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1251-6998
Sylvana Melo dos Santos
,"2026-10-22T11:20:42.901761Z"]
