It is estimated that, based on various experiences in urban agroecology and farmers' participation in policies on Urban and Periurban Agriculture (UPA), new agendas related to UPA agroecological transitions, and the transformation of UPA food systems must be defined. However, although the literature describes paradigm shifts in biopolitical spatial relations, economic values, urban metabolism and planning capacity what has come to be known as \"agroecological urbanism\" (Tornaghi and Dehaene, 2020) or urban agroecological socio-natures assemblages (Hammelman et al, 2022), the active role of communities that have historically been rooted in periurban areas remains unrecognized.These sustainable communities and social groups, organized around their local social, cultural, and environmental values, with their diverse forms of self-governance, cooperative organization, and autonomous administrations, participate effectively in economic, political, and social networks to promote and strengthen productive systems for self-sufficiency and the comprehensive stewardship of their territories.Our Opinion article argues that the example of radical epistemologies expressed within the framework of an Andean-Amazonian indigenous conceptualization of \"good living\" or \"sumak kawsay\", an analysis of the reciprocal practices, behaviors, and rituals of these communities, reveals cosmological limits to growth, insofar as there are normative restrictions that prevent harm to the Living Worldrestrictions that arise from relational ontologies that integrate human beings into the natural world (Ritcher, 2025;Díaz et al., 2015;Zimmerer, 2012). This, in turn, facilitates the generation and appropriation of collective surpluses for their own benefit, strengthening their community, while reinforcing autonomy.These radical epistemologies and their underlying cosmovisions are leading to changes in the ways in which food is produced and distributed, some of them implying alongside various forms of reconfiguration of market structures -or at least of what is traditionally understood as the market from the conventional logic of capitalism. Many periurban food systems in the Global South, we have moved from a structure of supply and demand dominated by large transnational corporations to a new form of market governed by alternative principles, in that food markets are not structured around the objective of 'profit' but rather by the primacy of 'solidarity' -understood as an exchange that seeks to restore and guarantee symmetry and equality in trade. For instance, in Mexico there are several initiatives in which traditional and agroecological farming contribute to the emergence and functioning of alternative markets (1. Agro-Food Initiatives of the Popular, Social, and Solidarity Economy {Iniciativas Agroalimentarias de Economia Popular Social y Solidarias, IAEPSS}, which brings together alternative organizations and collectives in response to the demand for agroecological and organic foods from health-conscious consumers, and 2. Eco-Solidarity Food Networks {Redes Alimentarias Ecosolidarias, REDAL}, which includes a digital platform and a mobile application) (Solís-Perez, et al., 2026). From the perspective of these new initiatives, the conventional concept of the 'market' becomes anachronistic or outdated, which is a promising issue.In this Opinion piece, we explore, the transitions taking place within the framework of traditional agriculture and agroecology in periurban areas from the perspective of radical ecological economics (REE). REE is focused on the close relationship between societies, and their environment contributes to the well-being and prosperity of the human and non-human parts of the complex environment on which both depend (Barkin et al., 2026;Barkin, 2026;Hermann, 2025.). REE guides the main arguments in this Opinion piece since under this framework it may be analyzed distinct trajectories of agrifood change in periurban areas that are spatial, environmental, and socioeconomic interfaces where particular pressures and tensions happen (i.e., the confrontation between urbanization and agricultural production). These interfaces incorporate the main contributions of communities and rural populations to local transition efforts, particularly where shared values, perceptions, and trust intersect with broader local and regional political and power dynamics stemming from traditional agriculture and agroecology, which stimulate the creation of alternative markets. This kind of markets may be defined by their characteristics, such as ease of implementation, the ability to revitalize local economies, a contribution to food culture and the revival of traditional foods and production methods, the promotion of social and geographic proximity between producers and consumers, as well as the potential to bring urban and rural communities together in spaces for interaction and commercial exchange (García et al., 2021). The argument highlights the epistemological challenges and institutional actions of the REE in defending the strategic value of these two types of agriculture in the regional development transition, alongside the recovery and strengthening of autonomy, resilience, and priorities driven by local communities and indigenous populations in the Global South.Various global challenges (e.g., climate change) are being intensified by a cascade of risks of irreversible tipping points in Earth systems, which require more than just incremental responses; collective action, cultural change, and a shared purpose are needed to steer exponential transformations across society (Andrade et al., 2026). In the Global South, most periurban areas are characterized by a mix of land uses and intense competition between agricultural and non-agricultural uses. Rapid urbanization in these areas leads to changes in land tenure, social and economic differentiation among residents, and shifts in the management and conservation of regional ecosystems. In periurban areas, a wide variety of agri-food systems can be identified, most of which are undergoing changes that could define them as hybrid systems, combining traditional (typically rural), emerging, and informal systems, as well as others that are expanding (Marshall et al., 2021). However, in areas undergoing urbanization at the expense of rural areas with a high concentration of traditional ancestral communities, a variety of agri-food systems managed by local and\u002For indigenous farmers are present, primarily in the Global South. In these periurban agri-food systems, various transformations are reconfiguring the set of activities, actors, outcomes, and relationships (dynamics) within the food system itself (Juri et al., 2024). As with global food systems, a fundamental challenge of these transformations lies in seeking a balance between increasing production to meet family, community, or regional periurban demands while simultaneously seeking to conserve the quality and quantity of natural resources, soil, and biodiversity as well as the socio-metabolic balance throughout the ecosystems in order to ensure sustainable production and consumption processes.However, despite the broad conceptual framework for assessing the complex interconnections of agrifood systems (Woodhill et al., 2025), and the distinctive regional changes along the periurban interface-such as declining agricultural production linked to local landscape dynamics-applications of the urban-rural nexus in policy design and decision-making remain lacking, particularly when regional and local dynamics are taken into account. It is estimated that in every country of the Global South there are significant obstacles to adapting the \"Nexus approach\" to the changing trends of regional agri-food systems (Torres-Lima et al., 2022); this is due to the lack of tools to translate conceptual and methodological frameworks into concrete outcomes for local agri-food production processes. For example, despite the vast body of knowledge generated over the past 35 years regarding traditional agricultural systems and agroecological practices -which demonstrate their relevance in contributing to increased agricultural production and food security-there are still links to work on between agroecological knowledge and farmers' practices (González-Chang et al. 2020;Wang and He, 2026).In this regard, in most periurban areas worldwide, particularly in the Global South, traditional agrifood systems remain dominant. Periurban agri-food production processes of a regional and local nature are quite variable in terms of sustainability characteristics (Zimmerer et al., 2026), such as efficiency in the use of natural resources, the conservation of environmental assets and services, the protection and strengthening of rural livelihoods, and the generation of local knowledge (Torres-Lima et al., 2022), to support ecological functions fundamental to the reproduction of urban life. For example, in addition to safeguarding biocultural territories and community-based forms of environmental management, the protection of periurban spaces and their productive systems can contribute to aquifer recharge, climate regulation, and the conservation of ecological corridors to counteract the destructive dynamics inherent in the expansion of hyper-urbanized cities. In direct dialogue with traditional agricultural systems, agroecology offers an approach to sustainable food systems that integrates science, practice, and social movements, aligns with food sovereignty, serves as a platform for knowledge co-production blending traditional knowledge and modern ecology, and promotes continuous transformation for socio-natural entanglements in urban agrifood systems: a shift toward a food system that reinforces the ecological and social principles and values of people and place, and prioritizes bottom-up governance and community-centered action (Hammelman et al., 2022;Giraldo, 2024;Temmer et al., 2025;Wang and He, 2026).Currently, periurban agri-food systems are undergoing three critical processes of change: a) an intense competition for land-that is, the spatial, environmental, and socioeconomic pressures and tensions in these regions resulting from the clash between urbanization and agricultural production (Torres-Lima and Madrigal-Gómez, 2025); b) socioeconomic differentiation resulting from gentrification and exclusion processes that affect all segments of society; and c) changes in the urban metabolism that transforms the flows of food, waste, and energy between urban and rural areas. In contrast, resilient trajectories in these areas are underpinned by community-based sustainability initiatives that include three elements for their success: 1) traditional agriculture (for instance, which maintains cultivated biodiversity, local knowledge, and community social organization); 2) agroecological markets, which are direct-sales spaces that restore fair prices and social recognition for agricultural labor; and 3) new governance models with participatory guarantee systems, cooperatives, including various forms of producer-consumer assemblies.As part of the development of new, relevant approaches for understanding the management of periurban agri-food systems for making priority decisions aimed at sustainable development, it is necessary to explore the structural complexity of the nexus between urban and rural societies. This nexus will highlight the potential synergies between sectors, within an integrated analytical framework to counteract the profound socio-ecological imbalances challenging periurban societies worldwide. As part of the examination of radically different social and ecological approaches to promote sustainable societies, it is important to understand and integrate grassroots community initiatives involved in the construction of periurban alternatives, as represented by the knowledge framework of radical ecological economics (REE). From the perspective of REE, the role of community members in reviving traditional knowledge and engaging in dialogue with scientific knowledge strengthens activities to care and restore their periurban ecosystems and agri-food systems. These productive alternatives are facilitating processes of social and ecological transformation, as well as the reduction and repair of socio-metabolic fractures, many of which were inherited from the agro-industrial model. For example, in some periurban areas of the Global South, communities are resisting and correcting these metabolic ruptures-that is, the disconnect between rural and urban areas-by strengthening effective and efficient technological and technical practices for food production and supply, local water management, integrated forest management, and other needs, without rejecting innovations and always within the framework of social inclusion and population well-being (Fantini, 2023;Lakshmi et al., 2024).Within the periurban context of the revitalization of traditional agriculture and agroecology, the REE views both approaches as transformative alternatives for local communities. In various parts of the world, within the framework of linking sustainability and new governance models for periurban development, diverse community members living in these areas are promoting efforts toward transition and change that enable their well-being and the strengthening of their political and community capacity through agri-food production governance practices that prioritize both community and individual wellbeing, based on relational, pluralistic, and ecocentric worldviews (Barkin et al., 2026). These processes of transformation in agri-food systems are highly complex (Woodhill et al., 2025). A critical factor is the effective participation of stakeholders, especially smallholder farmers, for example through the co-creation of knowledge-including what is known as traditional, indigenous, or local knowledge-alongside scientific, Western, or mainstream knowledge (Rosado-May et al., 2025).To the extent that the current conditions of periurban food systems and the culture driving the decisions and actions of local agricultural producers-as reflected in the design and management of these systems-are understood, it will be possible to outline periurban strategies and pathways for change that generate the use of agricultural systems and practices that can be considered sustainable and, at the same time, develop appropriate ways to sustain and increase food production in the face of the challenges posed by local and regional markets. These challenges can be met, for example, through the creation of alternative periurban agroecological markets, the marketing of surpluses is driven by local and solidarity-based markets that reflect values and principles such as health care and support for local producers-principles absent from the logic of the conventional market, where profit is the primary objective (Camacho, et al., 2022).The agenda for innovation and strengthening of periurban alternative markets may include the following considerations: 1) Shortening supply chains. Unlike conventional long supply chains, alternative markets establish direct connections between producers and consumers; 2) Closing local metabolic cycles. Some traditional agricultural systems represent examples of closed social metabolism (e.g., wetland systems (i.e., chinampas in Mexico), as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), which are considered the most intensive pre-Hispanic agricultural systems still present in Mexico today due to their extraordinary fertility and productivity); 3) Making agricultural labor visible. Alternative markets function as meeting places where knowledge is exchanged between marginalized producers and urban consumers; and 4) Recovery of knowledge and biodiversity. For instance, fairs featuring various crops (i.e., corn, beans, potatoes, etc.) and organic farmers' markets represent the revitalization of ritual activities that strengthen eroded community ties, providing dignity and meaning to communal life. Finally, in terms of institutional arrangements or governance mechanisms that could support new agendas for agroecological transitions and the transformation of periurban agrifood systems of the Global South, we identify some that should be related to strength to participatory governance capacities, such as: a) creation of local-regional productive networks of credit, supply and marketing; b) co-production of agroecological knowledge and technologies; c) creation of public mechanisms and economic instruments of environmental compensation by periurban agrifood systems; d) citizenship or awareness of natural heritage and regional sustainable development planning; and e) plural mechanisms for evaluating government engagement in alternative markets.High-priority sustainability pathways based on community-led initiatives, such as the integration of agroecological food markets and traditional agriculture, as well as new governance models for periurban development are essential.
