However, a fundamental question remains inadequately addressed: does enhanced environmental performance inherently translate to a more equitable food-processing sector? Existing research has primarily focused on energy efficiency, resource circularity, and technological innovation, with comparatively limited attention to how sustainability transitions reshape access to resources, value creation, benefit distribution, and participatory governance. Consequently, social equity remains a largely overlooked dimension in research on sustainable food processing. Using a Critical Interpretive Review (CIR) approach, this study systematically synthesizes the social equity challenges arising in sustainable and circular food processing and examines the structural mechanisms underpinning these challenges. The review identifies five principal equity challenges: unequal access to green technologies, inequitable distribution of value from circular resource utilization, emergent inequalities linked to digitalization and artificial intelligence, imbalances between environmental benefits and social costs, and unequal participation in governance structures. These challenges are not unintended consequences of technological innovation but are structurally determined by technology ownership, capital allocation, market power, institutional arrangements, and control over knowledge and data. Building upon these insights, this review advances an equity-centric framework for sustainable and circular food processing, in which social equity is posited as a foundational mechanism linking technological innovation, just transition, and enduring sustainability.
