This article examines the evolving role of the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB) in reducing exploration risk and supporting sustainable mineral development within the broader physiographic, political, and economic context of Brazil. The country’s continental-scale geology, extensive tropical terrains, and diverse mineral endowment present both challenges and opportunities for mineral discovery. Here, we review the historical evolution of mineral resources research by the SGB, highlighting technological advances in geophysics, geochemistry, remote sensing, and laboratory-based analytical methods that have transformed exploration into a data-driven and predictive discipline. It also discusses emerging trends such as artificial intelligence, deep mineral systems exploration, and integrated mineral intelligence frameworks. Particular emphasis is placed on the SGB’s strategic guidelines, including the assessment of critical and strategic minerals for the energy transition, fertilizers for food security, industrial minerals for infrastructure, mineral intelligence and initiatives promoting circular economy practices and sustainable development. By aligning geoscientific knowledge generation with national public policies and global mineral demand, the SGB contributes to reducing geological uncertainty, attracting investment, and strengthening Brazil’s position in international mineral supply chains.
