This study analyzes the spatio-temporal dynamics of land cover in the urban commune of Manéah, Guinea, between 1980, 2020, and 2024, in order to characterize the territorial changes associated with the development of extractive activities and urban expansion. The methodological approach relies on the use of multi-temporal satellite imagery, its processing in a GIS environment, supervised classification of the main land cover classes, diachronic analysis of changes, construction of a transition matrix, and evaluation of the quality of the classifications using the Kappa index. The results highlight a profound transformation of the landscape. Between 1980 and 2024, the proportion of built-up areas increased from 7.22% to 32.67%, a rise of 25.45 percentage points, while quarries and construction sites, absent in 1980, represented 2.05% of the territory in 2024, after reaching 7.50% in 2020. Conversely, cultivated land and fallow land increased overall by 18.58 percentage points. In contrast, natural formations experienced a sharp decline: shrub savannas decreased from 40.50% to 1.73%, bodies of water from 31.46% to 11.30%, and mangroves from 8.85% to 0.84%. The Kappa values of 0.76, 0.79, and 0.82 indicate a satisfactory agreement between the classifications. These changes reflect the increasing human impact on the territory, resulting from the combined effects of urbanization, agriculture, and extractive activities. The change matrix also confirms a structural recomposition of the territory, with built-up areas increasing from 963.406 ha to 4,357.55 ha, while shrub savannas decreased from 5,401.819 ha to only 230.389 ha over the entire study period. This study used the remote sensing and GIS techniques to analyze the satellite imageries of 6 years. These years include 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025. The study area covered an expanse of 1536 km² and comprised four land use\u002Fland cover (LULC) classes, including agricultural land, built-up area, barren land, and water bodies. The study used supervised classification Maximum likelihood classifier (MLC) to identify the dominant land use and land cover types and determine the percentage of the region that was covered by each class. The results show that there is a growing trend in the built-up area throughout the years. It increased from 115 km² in 2000 to 180 km² in 2005, 233 km² in 2010, 297 km² in 2015, 361 km² in 2020, and 440 km² in 2025. Thus, it can be stated that there was an increase in the built-up area by 325 km² or 282.6% over the studied period. In contrast, the amount of farmland decreased from 1,014 km² to 815 km² or 199 km². The area of barren land decreased as well from 280 km² to 153 km². At the same time, there was no significant change in the amount of water bodies from 127 km² to 128 km². Findings reveal a significant change from a primarily agricultural region to a region with a considerable presence of developed areas and emphasize the increasing pressure on productive land. Land use land cover classification revealed that natural environment (forest cover) declined from 76.95% (202,031.28ha) in 1987 to 42.07% (110,449.55ha) in 2024, representing a 50% loss. Disturbed forest increased from 13.48% to 27.80%, while farmland expanded from 6.90% to 26.08%. Factor analysis identified four dominant forest resource categories: timber\u002Fcharcoal\u002Ffibres (35.4% variance), medicinal plants\u002Froots\u002Fforest soil (14.8%), fruits\u002Fanimal fodder (9.9%), and meat\u002Fhoney (7.0%). Multiple regression showed socio-economic factors significantly influenced household forest dependence (R² = 0.279, F = 29.779, p \u003C 0.001), with education, age, and occupation as the strongest predictors. The findings reveal an intensive peri-urban transformation of the landscape: the built-up area surged from a baseline of 239.87 hectares in 2021 to 2,752.91 hectares by 2026. This study analysed changes between 2023 and 2024 across six agricultural landscapes in northern Benin using the Landscape Ecological Sustainability Index (LESI), calculated for 1 km2 landscape cells from Human Disturbance Coefficients (HDCs) assigned to satellite-derived land-cover classes. Interannual changes were assessed using ΔLESI, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Global Moran’s I, and the Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA). The contribution of land-cover transitions to HDC change was quantified and a Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis based on classification accuracy was additionally used to assess the robustness of the observed interannual changes to classification uncertainty, and complementary univariate and bivariate regression models examined the relationships between LESI variations and 11 biophysical and geographical variables, including their pairwise interactions. The interannual comparison between 2023 and 2024 showed a decrease in ecological sustainability in four sites, a slight increase in one, and relative stability in another. Significant spatial autocorrelation was detected in all sites (Moran’s I = 0.44–0.65; p \u003C 0.001). Some spatially limited transitions exerted important effects on HDC change. Sensitivity analysis confirmed that the direction of ΔHDC was robust to classification uncertainty in five of the six landscapes. The low explanatory power of the univariate models (R2 ≤ 0.081) indicates that no single variable independently explains the observed changes. The bivariate interaction analyses further showed that some associations were context-dependent, although their explanatory power remained limited, with the best-performing model accounting for only 10.9% of the variation in ΔLESI. To examine the influence of socioeconomic factors on deforestation, a binary logistic regression model was adopted. Landsat satellite imageries were analyzed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing tools. The supervised and unsupervised classification methods were used to detect and classify land cover changes. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was also used to map vegetation changes. The results of analysis revealed significant relationships between deforestation and factors such as income, population growth, developmental projects, and land-use activities. Notably, income had the highest influence on deforestation, with a unit increase in income leading to a 1.35 increase in deforestation (β = 1.35, p\u003C0.05).
