Here, we evaluate how fire frequency influences provisioning ecosystem services derived from tree species used by the Kuikuro people in the Xingu Indigenous Territory, Brazil. We inventoried 32 plots (10 × 10 m) in forest (n = 20) and savanna (n = 12) environments near the Afukuri village, spanning a fire-frequency gradient of zero to six burn events over the past 32 years (1985–2017). For all trees with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm, we identified species and recorded ethnobotanical uses through collaboration with Indigenous knowledge holders, grouping uses into three provisioning categories: food, construction\u002Fhandicraft, and medicinal use. We also included environmental predictors from remote sensing (altitude, slope, soil pH, clay content, and bulk density). We recorded 91 tree species, of which 43 (47%) provided at least one provisioning ecosystem service relevant to the Kuikuro. Redundancy analysis indicated that vegetation type explained most of the variation in the composition of useful species, while fire frequency and soil variables accounted for additional variation. In forests, higher fire frequency was associated with a lower abundance of species used for construction\u002Fhandicraft and medicinal purposes; in savannas, food-related species showed negative associations with fire frequency, whereas medicinal species showed weaker or contrasting responses. Species ecological importance and use relationships also differed between vegetation types, with useful species tending to be less abundant in forests and more abundant in savannas. Our findings indicate that fire history is associated with shifts in the composition and availability of culturally important tree species, particularly in forest environments that are increasingly exposed to fire. However, many edible plant species remain underutilized due to limited scientific characterization, weak integration into food systems, inadequate conservation attention, and insufficient application of emerging technologies for biodiversity assessment and management. This review evaluates the role of science and technology in supporting edible biodiversity conservation, nutritional utilization, grassland monitoring, and climate resilience within African grassland contexts. The review further examines processing technologies, nutritional composition, and food-safety considerations for underutilized edible species, linking conservation outcomes to food manufacturing applications and dietary relevance. A structured narrative review was conducted using records retrieved from Web of Science and Google Scholar, covering studies published from 2000 to 2026. Following the PRISMA-based identification, screening, eligibility assessment, and inclusion process, 74 studies were selected for qualitative synthesis. The included literature was examined across three interconnected thematic domains: (i) science and technology applications, including remote sensing, geographic information systems, ecological monitoring approaches, and molecular techniques; (ii) edible biodiversity conservation and utilization, focusing on plant diversity, nutritional potential, indigenous food resources, and sustainable management; and (iii) climate resilience and policy integration, addressing ecosystem adaptation, governance, and conservation planning. The review demonstrates that technological approaches provide valuable tools for documenting biodiversity patterns, improving ecological assessments, and strengthening evidence-based conservation decisions, although the extent of their application remains uneven across African grassland systems. The findings further highlight that underutilized edible species are constrained not only by limited consumption and market integration but also by inadequate agronomic research, conservation prioritization, and policy recognition. Based on the synthesized evidence, a science–technology integration framework is proposed to connect biodiversity monitoring, nutritional assessment, sustainable utilization, and climate adaptation strategies. This framework provides an evidence-informed pathway for advancing the conservation and sustainable use of edible plant diversity. The methodology is based on Landsat satellite data acquired between 1995 and 2025 and the calculation of NDVI. The results shows that the oasis areas in the study area increased by 42.36%. While this expansion reflects agricultural intensification, it may also lead to higher water consumption, soil degradation and biodiversity loss. Using the Google Earth Engine platform, we analyzed NDVI dynamics in the YRB from 2000 to 2020. The InVEST model was used to assess four key ES, including water yield (WY), carbon storage (CS), habitat quality (HQ), and soil retention (SR). Random forest and spatiotemporal geographically weighted regression models were further applied to explore the nonlinear relationships and spatial heterogeneity between NDVI and ES. The results showed that: (1) mean NDVI in the YRB was 0.692, 0.697, and 0.724 in 2000, 2010, and 2020, respectively, exhibiting clear spatiotemporal heterogeneity. (2) WY showed a non-monotonic trajectory of initial increase followed by decline, SR increased markedly, HQ remained relatively stable, and CS showed a slight decrease. (3) CS and SR showed more pronounced positive associations with NDVI, whereas WY and HQ exhibited stronger interval variability or weaker localized effects. (4) NDVI generally had positive local effects on CS, HQ, and SR, while the NDVI–WY relationship exhibited both positive associations and localized negative effects. Non-permanent aquatic systems, such as Mediterranean shallow water bodies, are particularly challenging because their characteristic abrupt wet-dry transitions over short timescales increase noise and misclassification of hydrological states. Organisms inhabiting these systems are tightly coupled to the timing, duration, and predictability of inundation phases. Here, we developed a Bayesian state-space approach to curate Sentinel-2 time-series data, improving the reliability of hydrological state detection in a system of shallow ponds in the eastern Iberian Peninsula. The curated hydrological state data enabled the quantification of non-permanent regimes using ecologically meaningful metrics, revealing substantial differences in water availability and predictability among neighboring ponds under similar climatic conditions. We demonstrate how these metrics are relevant to evolutionary ecology. Specifically, we link hydrological unpredictability to bet-hedging strategies in rotifer populations. Rotifer clones originating from more unpredictable ponds exhibited lower hatching fractions, which is consistent with adaptive risk-spreading strategies.
