Taking China’s rural e-commerce (RE) development as a case, this study analyzes the digital economy’s impact on RII and its mechanisms. Findings show RE development increases income but widens the income inequality gap: high-income farmers benefit more from RE’s income-generating effects, enlarging the income gap between high- and low-income households in both agricultural and non-agricultural sectors. Improving rural road and broadband infrastructure, selecting better-educated village managers with out-of-home work experience, upgrading household network conditions, and providing digital skill training for low-income farmers can mitigate RE’s effect of widening RII. The government can reduce RII by encouraging cross-regional collaboration of e-commerce enterprises, upgrading village infrastructure, narrowing the human capital gap among village managers, and expanding digital technology application among low-income
