The closures highlighted the need to identify and evaluate strategies for managing and building resilience to future blooms to minimize losses of access and impacts to the seafood system while protecting public health. Using a mixed methods approach, we integrated semi-structured interviews with insights from participant observation, commercial fisheries data, and other archival materials, to begin to address this need. We evaluated the impacts and implications of recent and potential DA management measures for access to crab by fishermen, seafood handlers, retailers and food service providers, and consumers, and explored strategies to mitigate them. Each of the measures considered—area closures, evisceration orders, depuration requirements, and educational campaigns—was found to have particular and potentially profound impacts and implications for the seafood system and its participants. The latter three measures, which are intended to mitigate the risk of consumer exposure to DA while still providing some access to the fishery and seafood products, differ in who can participate in the fishery, how and by whom the catch can be handled, and the product forms that may be sold. All were considered problematic, with evisceration and depuration expected to affect access by re-distributing opportunities, costs and benefits among fishery participants and communities. Various mitigation strategies may lessen the adverse impacts of these measures, including “normalizing” evisceration and directing resources toward training, product development, and marketing to enable broader fishery and market participation, among others. Further, our findings support a fundamental paradigm shift for addressing this issue from one of fishery resource management to one of food system management, utilizing existing frameworks and systems and making it consistent with how other food contaminant concerns are managed. This study represents one of the first coordinated efforts to map the United States’ Great Lakes seafood value and supply chains. Using state agency data requests, informal interviews, and a nine-state online survey conducted in 2024, we identified aquaculture farms, commercial fishers, and seafood processors, documented regulatory authorities and their disparities, and examined market dynamics and access to locally sourced seafood. Four key findings illustrate the intricacy of the U.S. Great Lakes seafood food system. First, seafood-related data are limited, inconsistently collected, and not comparable across jurisdictions. Second, the seafood supply chain management is exceptionally complex, shaped by fragmented regulatory authorities and species-specific production systems. Third, processors outnumber producers nearly two to one, raising questions about supply origins and reliance on imported seafood. Fourth, regulatory restrictions, product availability, and distribution costs may be the biggest barriers for accessing locally produced seafood. We suggest that these findings demonstrate that Great Lakes fish play five primary roles—food, finances, fun, function, and fellowship – which shape the structure, governance, and performance of the Great Lakes seafood system. Despite horticulture being Tanzania’s fastest-growing agricultural sub-sector, accessing export markets remains a challenge, with only 0.3% of the produce reaching international markets. Findings reveal critical gaps in national standards. For instance, while the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has developed over 3,000 standards, those relating to fruits and vegetables often lack specific safety limits for different hazards. This regulatory void leaves domestic consumers vulnerable to food safety hazards while forcing exporters to adhere to costly private standards like GlobalGAP for EU market access. The results highlight a heavy reliance on traditional, reactive food inspections rather than more effective risk-based approaches, with inspection efforts disproportionately focused on export produce while neglecting local markets. Furthermore, regional harmonization of standards remains fragmented. While the East African Community and the African Continental Free Trade Area have made progress in aligning regional standards, Tanzania’s inconsistent implementation creates regional trade hurdles and increases compliance costs. To overcome these barriers and boost trade, Tanzania must establish robust, transparent, and harmonized food safety standards. This review critically synthesizes the global evidence of sources, transport pathways, environmental fate and transfer to the food chain of industrial contaminants in agricultural soils. It emphasizes the paradox of high crop yields in spite of the clandestine build-up of toxic substances that deteriorate soil health, microbial diversity, crop safety and the long term sustainability of agriculture. The major challenges are poor management of industrial waste, lack of monitoring systems, interactions among pollutants, weak regulatory frameworks and limited knowledge about emerging contaminants under changing climatic conditions. The review also includes integrated mitigation measures such as sustainable waste management, innovative soil remediation techniques, phytoremediation, biochar use, precision agriculture and other stronger environmental policies to reduce the accumulation of contaminants and human exposure. Future perspectives emphasize the need for high-throughput monitoring tools, remote sensing, biosensors, digital soil mapping, improved risk assessment frameworks, and interdisciplinary research to better understand contaminant dynamics and develop resilient soil management strategies. The spread of antimicrobial resistance genes within aquaponic microbial communities is identified as a critical emerging public health concern requiring integration into One Health surveillance frameworks. Barriers to aquaponics adoption in Africa are assessed across economic, technological, environmental, and regulatory dimensions. Targeted preventive controls, including water quality management, biosecurity, disinfection, and good agricultural practices, are discussed within resource-appropriate frameworks. Future directions including smart monitoring, AI-driven decision support, and probiotic biocontrol are examined.
