However, the extent of land cover dynamics driven by this expansion and associated biophysical impacts remains insufficiently quantified. Here, we utilized multi-temporal remote sensing data and geospatial information for areas surrounding more than 56,000 oil and gas wells in the basin to quantify shrubland to impervious surface transitions, changes in vegetation condition using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and changes in surface reflectance using albedo from 2008 to 2024. We compared three-year pre-development (2008-2010) and post-development (2022-2024) composites and evaluated changes across buffer distances ranging from 50 m to 50 km around wells and paired control sites that remained stable shrublands throughout the study period. Results reveal highly concentrated land transformation near wells, where relatively small spatial footprints accounted for disproportionately large shares of shrubland to impervious surface transitions (e.g., 0.83% of basin area within 100 m of wells accounted for over 22% of basin-scale transitions). Transition rates were highest within 50 m of wells and declined with increasing distance. County-level regression models further confirmed the positive association between well development and shrubland to impervious surface transitions while controlling for population change. We also found that impacted sites experienced smaller increases in NDVI than paired control sites, likely indicating reduced vegetation growth. In addition, impacted sites showed greater increases in surface albedo than paired control sites, indicating measurable biophysical impacts that are not evident in basin-scale averages. Overall, energy development contributed to intense, localized land transitions and notable broad-scale biophysical changes in the Permian Basin. These findings provide critical insights for assessing the environmental impacts of oil and gas development and managing land and future energy development in semi-arid regions.","摘要 二叠纪盆地（Permian Basin）贡献了美国近一半的石油产量，过去二十年间经历了大规模的能源开发活动。 ,null,"Environmental Research Energy","2026-10-05T00:00:00Z","论文",10,false,0
12],[
"needs_review","2026-10-22.2","rules
[28,37
"W7220439110",[51,54,57,60,63,66
Nastaran Abdoli","https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9922-1687
Nishan Bhattarai","https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2749-3549
Jayash Paudel","https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3430-7943
Yanhua Xie","https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9814-5395
Jennifer Koch","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7067-2705
Heather Bedle","https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3010-0195","https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/2753-3751/aeb02d/pdf
,"openalex","2026-10-07T23:30:28.827801Z
1,[]]
