This study investigates the spatial relationship between sinkholes and the distribution of “Calcare Cavernoso” in Tuscany (Italy) and updates the regional subset of the ISPRA national sinkhole database. An integrated approach combined bibliographic information, targeted field surveys, historical cartography, and multi-source geospatial datasets. Geological and thematic layers were retrieved from the Tuscany “Geoscopio” portal, while Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery was processed using the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) to support the detection of flooded sinkholes. Historical maps were exploited to infer sinkhole persistence and potential evolutionary trends, including partial or complete infilling. All thematic layers (geology, faults, hydrography, quarries, mines, topography, and sinkholes) were harmonized, georeferenced, and rasterized on a 250 × 250 m grid within an ESRI ArcGIS environment. Susceptibility modelling was implemented using density-based proxies and an Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) framework, producing probability outputs subsequently grouped into classes to enhance operational usability. The results substantially expand the regional sinkhole inventory (from 88 to 1223 mapped features) and support a strong spatial association between sinkhole occurrence and “Calcare Cavernoso”, further corroborated by targeted field checks. The most influential susceptibility drivers include “Calcare Cavernoso”, low-slope settings, DTM-derived parameters, fault density, and anthropogenic underground activities (quarries and mines), while other variables show secondary or more complex contributions.","“洞穴状石灰岩”（Calcare Cavernoso）地层是一种白云质碳酸盐岩单元，以泡沫状结构和高原生孔隙率为特征，有利于地下水驱动的溶蚀作用和空洞发育，并可能诱发地面沉降。 ,null,"Rendiconti online della Società Geologica Italiana","2026-10-14T00:00:00Z","论文",10,false,0
12],[
"needs_review","2026-10-22.2","rules
[28,36
"I3",8,true,[33],"remote sensing",[],[
"W7221776371",[49,52,55
Marina Funaro","https://orcid.org/0009-0002-8909-173X
Stefania Nisio","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5422-3694
Sergio Madonna","https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8862-0463","https://www.rendicontisocietageologicaitaliana.it/fulltext/4337/calcare-cavernoso-as-a-key-predisposing-factor-for-sinkhole-occurrence-in-tuscany-italy-inventory-update-remote-sensing-detection-and-gis-ml-susceptibility-modelling
,"openalex","2026-10-16T23:30:28.468270Z
1,[]]
